Zoxe 101: Standard Colors

Hi!  I am getting ready for Adepticon.  I'll set this to robo-post.

As time goes on, the tools and methods we use continue to evolve.  Sometimes it's a desire to try some new trick you read or saw, or sometimes it's a desire to try a different product to see what the fuss is about.

With every project, however, there seems to be a set of colors that you just can't get away from.  Here's a quick post about 3 of them.  I'll do a few more down the road.

Standard Colors, Round 1 - Reaper Black Wash (yes, this counts as a color), AP Necromancer Cloak, and AP Gun Metal (aka Pistol Metal in the Brimstone kit)
  • Reaper Black Wash - This wash has found its way onto nearly every model that I've worked on in the past 14 months.  I count it as a 'color' because it's that distinctive.  Despite the name, the "Black" wash actually has a lot of BLUE in it, so don't mistake it for a clone of other products.  It makes blues and grays pop like nothing else.  It is quite dense; if I'm actually using it as a wash I tend to thin it at least 1:1 with distilled water or else it will overpower all your hard work.  Where the product really shines, though, is as a shader for nooks and crannies of your model.  If you have a place that needs to be dark but would look odd if it were pure black, grab the Black Wash and add a layer or two.  Sometimes I use the product both ways on the same model - for the KDM Watcher, I washed the entire model with thinned Black Wash and then I went back and put shadows in the folds of his cloak with unthinned.  The only complaint I have is that it really doesn't like 2 brush blending.  Apply it, but don't touch it again, don't try to move it or 'erase' it with a wet brush.  If you do, it will ball up and get gritty, and/or leave ponding marks.
  • AP Gun Metal - AP products have their haters online, but I really love their washes and their metallics.  For this silver, the metallic solids are fairly fine (can be airbrushed reasonably well). It's pretty thin coming out of the bottle, but can be thinned further and still cover well.  Unlike some other metallics, it doesn't cure too quickly and get goopy on the palette. In terms of the color, it's a neutral, fairly dark, and chewy silver.  It has a fair amount of black in it, perfect for worn metal or something that has seen some weather.  It is not going to look right on a larger surface (an entire robot, or something) but is the perfect complement to most color schemes and looks great applied as a basecoat with a colored ink over it.  (Bonus points: I typically use AP Chainmail Metal as a highlight color; which 'feels' the same but is brighter and less black). When finishing the DFC Fleet, I used Gun Metal as a dry brush over the entire model; it dry brushes exceedingly well and gave the ships a very worn, lived-in look.  I have tried other silvers (Reaper, Scale75) and always come back to my trusty friend.
  • AP Necromancer Cloak - I've written about this color before.  It is used on every (every!) one of my models somewhere, if only as a shadow color.  This is a charcoal gray that's very close to black - but isn't - so you can have it stand in for black when you need it to (black boots, black robes) and still have some room to provide shadows.  When I am basecoating with an airbrush, I almost always use this as the first color in the stack, and spray from below to provide shadows.  For KDM, this is the base layer of shadows for both heroes and monsters.  For Brimstone, it's the 'black' in cloaks and the Nun-with-a-Gun's habit.  For Dropfleet, it's the base layer, some panel lines, and some accent panels.

Zoxe Project Status - October 2018

Well, fudgepickles.  Halloween came and went and I never once thought about doing a ZPS.  It's now almost halfway through the month, but I'd still like to make the entry.

Honestly, though, I've been limping along with a persistent case of black death (sinus infection) and the last week really hasn't been all that productive anyway.

1. On the Table:
  • Shadows of Brimstone - This will be a single entry here because it's been THE THING going on.  I updated my storage, inventoried expansions and cards, and otherwise just plain got organized.  I dug out some long lost expansions from my pile of shame and the long term storage shelf and got them painted.  Derelict Ship, Sand Kraken, and Nun with a Gun are done while the Doomsday Device is nearly complete and the Depth Tracker is in primer.  We even started a new 2p campaign, based on a story arc that I sketched out.
2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Fall Chores - The weather held nicely, and before my sinus infection settled in, I dropped 4 dead trees and carved a small path through the back part of our woods.  I've got a few more to go, and a lot of trail to cut, but it's been a good Fall so far.  Now if I can just get through the Holidaze and see if early December will cooperate.
  • PAX Unplugged - PAX-U is at the end of the month.  There's a little bit of hype building about the event, although I don't know what events/classes we'll even attempt to get into.  But, we're looking forward to returning to Philly, being in a better hotel position (we're in the Marriott this time; the Hampton Inn was fine but was on the wrong side of the hall), and eating some of their outstanding downtown food.
  • Dropfleet Commander - The UCM fleet is still (still!) on my table but hasn't been touched while I process all the Brimstone stuff.  Honestly, I got tired of painting that color gray and the tedium of fixing panel lines.  But, I think I'm in a place where I can bang out the rest of the cruisers and maybe finish the New York class battleship and take a small squadron to PAX-U for display/contest.
3. Losing Traction:
  • KDM Wave 2 - I'll leave this here (again); no shipping updates yet on Wave 3 and I've yet to have need for any of the expansions.
4. Going, going, gone.

Zoxe Project Status - September 2018

Welcome to another ZPS!  This intro part is where I normally type about how quickly the month went.  But I'll surprise you by saying that September was a good month.  The temperatures finally broke, we had a good mix of wet weather and dry, and I felt like I was gaining ground on many facets of work/life despite being on the road 3 of the 4 weekends.

I should also note that this marks 1 year of doing Zoxe Project Statuses.

1. On the Table:
  • Dropfleet Commander - I'm still working on the UCM Cruisers.  I'm having a huge case of the "meh's" when it comes to the panel lines, but overall I'm really happy with how they're looking.  But I've admittedly set them aside over the past week just to paint something other than gray.  I really want to get this project done, so I'm going to devote some time week after next and hopefully crank them the rest of the way through.
  • Shadows of Brimstone Sand Kraken - In the next day or two, I'll post a Hot off the Desk for the Sand Kraken.  Not my favorite sculpt, but really fun to paint and a great excuse to try some new and different colors (including some neon green and orange hues).
  • Shadows of Brimstone Nun with a Gun - I've had a lot of SoB waiting in my pile of shame for quite awhile ... but I currently have the Nun (alternate Priest) on the table.  There's a story behind this model; it's kind of a pivotal moment and could mark a shift in what I work on the rest of the calendar year.

/storymode:  In the last gasps of 2016, I batch primed (rattle can) quite a few SoB minis to get me through the winter (since we couldn't rattle-can inside very well during cold weather).  Everything went well, until I grabbed the can of White.  That particular can of white shot like Christmas tree flock combined with silly string.  Super thick, super puffy, and really disheartening considering the target was a batch of (expensive and rare) SoB resin figures, including the Nun.  I cleaned them off the best I could, but they were a mess, and didn't paint anything for about 6 months.

Fast forward: I now use an airbrush and have upped my game all around, BUT those figures are still in the pile awaiting their turn.  I have an SoB campaign that I want to run - using the Priest/Nun - and groaned when I realized that the Nun was in the pile of rattle can misery.  BUT, I was able to clean her off with just a little isopropyl alcohol and a toothbrush.  I've currently got her reprimed and basecoated, and the sassy ol' Nun with a Gun will be posted here in the next week or two.
2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Fall Chores - It maybe sounds weird, but I look forward to working outdoors in the late fall and early winter.  Cold weather has always been my friend.  I've got several things around our 10 acres that are queued up and ready to go once the leaves are starting to fall.
  • Warmahordes - I bought a pair of the warehouse clearance that some of you may have been aware of.  For $59, you got $240ish (MSRP) worth of models as a blind grab bag.  I still don't intend to play, but I really love their sculpts.  I got Cryx and Cygnar and then quickly traded my Cygnar for Ret with a coworker.
3. Losing Traction:
  • KDM Wave 2 - I'll leave this here (again); no shipping updates yet on Wave 3 and I've yet to have need for any of the expansions.  I love the KD universe, but kind of have the idea of clearing away the SoB backlog before I uncrack the classic KDM expansions.
4. Going, going, gone.

ZPS - August 2018

UCM Frigates - Done!

August came and went in a flash.  Work had me on the road quite a bit, and I've struggled to keep any sort of momentum at the office.  It seems like GenCon was a long time ago, but it's only been a few weeks.

1. On the Table:
I feel like I've gotten a lot done, but these piddly little entries don't quite do it justice.

  • Miniature Monthly Masters Contest Entry - After GenCon, I was planning to get back to Dropfleet Commander (DFC) cruisers and capital ships, but decided to put an entry into this contest.  As a single figure, it is probably a personal best and while I'm hoping to be competitive, I don't expect to place.  I'm super happy with the results, though.  I'll post pictures after the results, but it's been a good chance to use some new colors and try some new things.
  • Dropfleet Commander - The frigates are DONE and the cruisers and capital ships are airbrush-basecoated and shaded.  Now that MM-Masters submission in, I've pulled them back to the front of the queue and am starting to pick out details before I mask all the accent stripes.
  • ReaperCon - We're actually at ReaperCon RIGHT NOW!  I set this post to robo-post while we're away.  Looking forward to a few painting classes, and maybe some tabletop RPGs.

2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Magic: the Gathering - Bought some cards on a whim after being away for almost 15 years.  I have no intention of playing competitively at the FLGS, but a few pickup games around the house have been fun.  I'd hoped to get some MTG in at GenCon but the stars didn't align (but that's okay).  For where we're at, their preconstructed decks are pretty fun and work okay for a weeknight brawl.

3. Losing Traction:
  • Gloomhaven - Wish we had time to continue our campaign.  Weekends lately have been mowing, painting, and recovery.  Weeknights have been no good for long gaming sessions either.
  • KDM Wave 2 - Also wish I had more time to dig into these, but reality is reality.  After the DFC ships are done, these are next, but realistically I don't expect to get to them for several weeks.

4. Going, going, gone.
  • Summer - Labor Day marks the end of another summer (even though Fall doesn't technically begin for another few weeks).  I'm okay with this.  Summer is my least favorite season - humidity and bugs and mowing the lawn.  There's also this underlying peer pressure (reinforced by the marketing gurus at Lowes, Home Depot, and Bud Light) that Summer is supposed to be "fun" with lots of time outside being social.  Honestly, I'd rather be outside in October and November when the temperatures are nice.  I'm looking forward to splitting wood, running the chainsaw, and some crisp dry mornings.  So screw you, Summer, and get the heck out of here already.

ZPS - July 2018

July was all about Dropfleet

I'm going to break tradition and go rogue for this month's formatting.  Instead of the 4 normal categories of things rising and falling in priority, let's just ramble a little bit.  I know you'll miss the bullet points; they shall return next month.  There are basically three topics I wanted to tackle.  Gencon, Dropfleet, and more Gencon.

I. Gencon and a Retrospective.

Gencon is in a few days.  That's a good thing; I could use the time away from the office, and am very much looking forward to seeing old friends and walking the convention floor.  I'll be glad to visit some of my favorite booths and chat with people that I've developed online conversations with.  And I'm excited to be in the same room as one of my favorite authors - James S.A. Corey.

Gencon also marks the first anniversary of this blog, at least in concept if not by posting date.  There were things I wanted to write about coming out of last year's event, and this venue became the repository for those things.

It's been a good year.  Sometimes it feels like I'm overwhelmingly behind the curve in terms of project progress.  I mean, I'm just now getting to DFC (figures I bought last August).  But in terms of personal/hobby growth, it's been a big year.  I've typed about this before, but model prep (filling, moldline removal, priming) and airbrushing shading are the two biggest things I've added to my toolkit and now take for granted.  I'm still learning blending and brush control, and am looking for ways to expand how I do detail work with the airbrush.  But there are some big game-changing things I hadn't attempted - and was afraid of - this time last year.

Good, but not quite good enough.  Watch for improvements.
II. Dropfleet Commander.

As the Kenny Rogers classic says, "you have to know when to hold them, know when to walk away, and know when to run."

The big Dropfleet push (GC Project #2) started strong, and as the month started I had a really good feeling about it.  The test piece (shown above) looked great, model assembly went well (except for the Battlecruiser) and I was about to pop my knuckles, roll my neck, and crank out a lot of little ships.

But weekend before last, I hit a point where I was mapping out the remaining work against remaining days and coming up short.  Shortly after, I realized I was starting to make trades in quality for the sake of schedule.  "Oh, I'll just skip this, it'll look okay."  Ack, not the situation I wanted to be in.

I have a ton of money wrapped up in the DFC fleet.  I really didn't want to drop back and punt (whoa! Zoxe used a sports metaphor!) but I really didn't want to be unhappy with the result.  The direction I was going was perhaps "above average" in terms of DFC ships I see on google search results, but I knew that I was capable of better.  And as I said, I was looking for shortcuts that were becoming too tempting.

The voice in my head said that I should drop out of my DFC event at Gencon but it took a few days for me to say it out loud.  But, once I admitted it, it gave me the creative freedom to go back through the ships I thought were "done" and do some additional work, fixing things and pulling out details that I'd otherwise have overlooked.  It's also allowing me to take some risks and develop some additional skills instead of just assembly-lining them through.  Are they pro-level?  Oh, heck no.  But I'm far happier with the results I'm seeing.

Get Ready.

III. Getting Ready for Gencon.

There are a lot of google results for "how to Gencon" so I won't replicate that level of detail here.  Sure, the event is an unwieldy beast, and we certainly have our own recipe, but there's really no "wrong" way to do the event.  Instead, I'll share a few personal steps:

  1. Take your vitamins.  'Con Crud is an illness that's real.  Between all the unwashed masses you'll be rubbing against, late nights, crappy diet, and various forms of nerd stress it's easy to compromise your immune system.  I think I've been sick after at least the last 2 of 3 Gencons.  This year, even though we drive, I'm treating it like one of my work trips to the airport:  multivitamins and extra sleep in the days prior, and vitamin C throughout.  (I'm not a doctor and this is not medical advice, just do what makes sense for you).
  2. Stay hydrated.  We bring water with us each day and buy more there.  This is a little crude, but if you haven't had to pee in awhile, ask yourself why.
  3. Don't eat the food in the convention center.  We bring healthy snacks to grab throughout the day.  When it comes time to find an actual meal we go to the food trucks - there will be two areas where they congregate and they'll rotate each day.  I can't say that the food trucks are any cleaner than the convention center, but the food can be lighter (less "cafeteria-ey"), tastes better, and getting some fresh air won't hurt you (really).
  4. Make dinner reservations.  Preferably somewhere outside the radius where the nerd hordes will pillage.  Sit down, have a real dinner and an adult beverage or two with friends.  You might be thinking you need to be rolling dice 23 hours a day, but just stop and pause and enjoy the weekend for what it is: time with people like you.  Indy is a great city that supports the 'con like few other places, step outside and enjoy it.

ZPS - June 2018

Caldari from EVE Online: Painting inspiration for Dropfleet Commander.

It's hot, humid, and the bugs bombard me whenever I step out the front door.  Spring must be over and it's gotta be summer!

1. On the Table:

  • GenCon Project #1 - I had high hopes of getting project GC1 done by mid-June, but it wasn't meant to be.  Between the Ikea Hellquest and a gazillion little things that needed doing before my annual family BBQ, I lost at least 2 if not 3 weeks of progress.  But, I've recovered and actually put the last adjustments on the final figure last night.  As soon as I post this, I'll put her on her base and I'll call this one done.
  • Dropfleet Commander - Finally, finally, I'm going to shoot some primer on the first ships today or tomorrow for GenCon Project #2 (GC2).  I'm prepping for an event at GenCon, so I have a lot of work cut out ahead of me.  But I've come up with a reasonable Fleet List that won't cause me to build (that) many more ships.  Since this project isn't cloaked in secrecy, I'll be able to share some pictures as I go.
  • Convention Planning - GenCon's events are planned and in the pipe.   PAX unplugged tickets are bought and the hotel is reserved.  ReaperCon tickets are bought, hotel reserved, and event tickets purchased.  Phew.

2. Gaining Momentum:

  • GenCon Project #3 - I don't have much hope of finishing this one but I might be able to squeak it out.
  • KDM Expansions - They're still in the box, but if I can knock out all the GC stuff, assembly of the Legacy Expansions will finally begin.
  • Guild Wars 2 - It's stupid humid (heat advisories most days this week), so I've been hiding inside enjoying some PC games for a change.  I enjoy the vanilla game most, so I rolled a new Elementalist and have been working across the map.  I'd never played a Double Dagger Ele before, and have been having a blast (pun intended) with her.

3. Losing Traction:

  • Gloomhaven - Not by choice.  Need to get the campaign back out and continue to play.  I'll need to hotseat some Dropfleet before GenCon, so I'm not sure we'll have the time or space to make progress.

4. Going, going, gone.

  • Biking - I haven't been on the bicycle since last May.  Have been getting the itch lately (I do miss it) but my timing and the weather couldn't be much worse.

ZPS - May 2018

Well, this sets an a precedent that I'm not all that comfortable with.  The very last post was the April ZPS and here we are in June already.  There's a lot going on, but I'm choosing not to post about my contest entries, so that means very little to actually say here.

1. On the Table:
  • GenCon Project #1 - Last month I was doing assembly.  This month I'm perhaps past halfway through.  I'm doing a 'squad' of SoB figures for this project.  I'm kind of excited about it; it's some of my best work to date.  I've been able to combine some of the airbrush techniques I learned through the KDM builds this winter with some of the hand-brushing ideas that Miniature Monthly has taught me.  Is it world-class? Oh, heck no.  But it's some of my best work.  As they say: #donenotperfect.
  • GLOOMHAVEN - We've officially started our campaign.  I can kind of sit back and sigh about why this game has drawn so much positive attention.  Loving it so far.
  • Convention Planning - GenCon's event queue processed.  Once again we got a high queue number despite being online and clicking the second the selection engine went live.  So, no SoB.  No KDM.  No Elizabeth Beckley painting sessions.  But, as it turns out, the authors of one of my favorite book series - James S.A. Corey of the Expanse will be the keynote authors, and we'll be filling our time with meet and greets and such.  Plus a 1250 point battle for DropFleet (more below).  Fun with friends, a late evening class on basing and we still have a very full GenCon weekend.
  • More Convention Planning - PAX Unplugged tickets went live.  We bought a 3 day pass and have a nice room at the Marriott (attached to the convention center).  After years of really hating Philly for their crappy airport during work travel, it kind of pains me to say this: "I'm pretty excited to head back to Philly this fall."
  • Yet more Convention Planning -  Labor Day weekend we'll be in Texas for ReaperCon.  The event list isn't up, but we're looking forward to another road trip.  Yes, we'll be driving from the upper midwest to Texas.  Call us crazy.
2. Gaining Momentum:
  • DropFleet Commander.  As I mentioned above, I signed up for a friendly 1250pt battle at GenCon.  That means that I not only need to get my starter box fleet painted, I also need to get the Battlefleet Box opened, assembled, and painted.  I put the SoB project first, but at the rate that I paint DFC is probably going to consume a good chunk of the summer.  But I'm a little scared about getting this done in time.
3. Losing Traction:
  • KDM Wave 2.  All of my expansion boxes are still where I left them.  I'm trying to crank through the GenCon projects first, and actually want to savor the KDM builds I will enjoy later.  Still, I see other people's Wave 2 work in progress and get jealous.
4. Going, going, gone.
  • I'm a little concerned about Gencon Project #2, which is focused on some SodaPop figures I picked up.  I'm worried about getting everything done by August, and this is the last project on the priority list.  On the other hand, the figures weren't cheap and I'll have wasted that investment if I don't pull it off.

ZPS - April 2018

I'm a bit tardy on this, but seeing that I skipped the ZPS entry for March, I'll declare victory by simply clawing my way back to the blogger interface.  We'll use this post to catch everything up.

1. On the Table:
  • GenCon Project #1 - Work has started. As I type, cement is drying.  This particular one will go to the Shadows of Brimstone booth, but I won't post details until after the event.  Sorry.
  • DropFleet Commander - Gathering dust since before our early April vacation, but technically still "on the table."  I've been struggling with an elegant way to hold them for airbrushing, and think I have something I can try.  I need to just shut up and prime them.
  • GenCon.  Speaking of GenCon, tomorrow the event queue goes live.  Last year we watched with horror as our event wish list evaporated into a bunch of gray "sold out" statuses, but we can hope for a better queue position this year.  This also brings with it a sense of excitement and other planning with friends (hello Pevil) and strategizing how we want to spend our favorite weekend in August.
2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Miniature Monthly.
    • I've been part of the Patreon subscriber base for months, and have enjoyed it so far.  The more recent posts about model preparation and filling have made the entry free worthwhile.
    • Back at the end of March, we spent a weekend in Chicago with Aaron and Liz for their first Boot Camp.  It wasn't cheap, but was a great road trip weekend, and we got a lot of hands on time with some very talented people.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
  • Promotion.  I got promoted at work.  It was a competitive posting and shocked myself by winning it despite a horrible interview.  I started when we got back from our vacation, just finished week #3, and it's been "so far, so good."  But I've also been putting in some extra time to try to get ahead of the curve.  (Thankfully, all that time gets comped and will be expended during GenCon weekend...).  In my new area there are a pair of other gamers, so I can finally talk openly about the hobby at work again.
  • KDM Wave 2.  As you know, the big box of evil arrived some time ago. They're still in shrink wrap.  I've mentally placed them behind GenCon Project #1 and DFC, but may not be able to show that much restraint.  Gorm! Dragon King! These beasts need released.
  • GenCon Projects #2 and #3.  Technically #3 might become the Minaiture Monthly Master's entry, but I'm putting some thought into how to tackle a few quick-but-cool side projects to enter into some painting contests.
3. Losing Traction:
  • Gloomhaven.  Will leave GH here (again) as the "game I wish I had time to play but don't" entry for the month.

4. Going, going, gone.
  • I'll put GW2 here. I've been logging in to get my daily satchel, but that's about it.  With the warmer weather, I don't have the gumption to sit for hours behind a laptop anymore. That kind of hobby makes more sense when it's cold out and there's a fire in the fireplace, I guess.

ZPS - February 2018

Ahoy!

So, a few minutes ago I thought to myself, "You should think about doing your ZPS post, because February is almost.... oh damn."  Yup, it's March!

1. On the Table:
  • Dropfleet Commander!  Some said it would never happen, but it's on the table.
    • I've got the Core Box UCM Fleet mostly assembled.  Only 7 models total, but have been taking my time with it.
    • Next will be a pair of "convention show only" resins, Cruiser sized.
    • I am checking the FLGS tomorrow for a Battleship box. They had them in stock last I checked, but that was ... August.
    • Part of my slowness is that I want to get past mid-month before I actually dive into any painting, see comments about MM Boot Camp below.
    • Battlefleet Box will follow all that, but will likely get deferred when KDM Wave 2 arrives.
  • Is it legal to leave Kingdom Death out of this first bucket?  Yah, I didn't think so.
    • COMPLETE:  What I've been calling the "core of the Core Box" is done.  All monsters (bosses) and the 8 unique survivor figures are painted and ready.
    • I'll pop open the sprue box later for additional survivor armors.
    • Wave 2 appears to be shipping per the revised schedule. My backerkit was charged for shipping yesterday, which means things get underway on/around the 7th.  I still predict a somewhat bumpy ride and longer-than-most-people-will-expect fulfillment.

2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Miniature Monthly.
    • I've been part of the Patreon subscriber base for months, and have enjoyed it so far.  The more recent posts about model preparation and filling have made the entry free worthwhile.
    • They have a pretty lively and supportive Discord channel (for subscribers) that's been one of my evening hangouts lately.
    • We're doing their Boot Camp later this month, one day with Aaron Lovejoy (Flying Frog / Shadows of Brimstone factory painter) and the other with Elizabeth Beckley (Ninja Division and Kingdom Death factory painter).
    • Hopefully can learn some things to apply to the DFC paint.
  • PC Game:  Guild Wars 2.  Holding its own in this category, though I haven't done any marathon sessions in quite awhile, I still login most nights if only to move things around.
  • Yard Work.  We live on 10 acres, and right now is the very short window where the weather is somewhat nice, it's too cold for insects, and things haven't turned green yet.  So I've been working down a list of things I need to get done before I lose access due to the return of underbrush.  It gets me outside, and this is the kind of work I enjoy most (mowing the lawn in 90+ deg heat in August humidity and swarms of insects is the kind I like least).

3. Losing Traction:
  • Gloomhaven.  Will leave GH here as the "game I wish I had time to play but don't" entry for the month.

4. Going, going, gone.
  • Shadows of Brimstone.  Temporary hold, but it's been ages since I touched any SoB content I'll shrug and put it in the #4 bucket of shame.  I expect this to change in the Spring months as I have a pretty cool little project in mind to bring to GenCon this year.
  • PC Game:  All Blizzard Games.  After a brief hurrah, Overwatch, Hearthstone, and Heroes of the Storm are out of my rotation completely.

ZPS - January 2018

Kingdom Death: Monster:  Brace for Wave 2

A couple of days late, but truth be told I stepped away from both the paint bench and the laptop and did a wholesale veg-out over the past work week.  Hoping to get a few things done this weekend, but no promises.

1. On the Table:
  • Kingdom Death: Monster.  Perpetually at the top of this list, or so it seems.
    • At the time of this writing I am working on the last 3 figures from the Core box that I intend to assemble and paint right now - the Watcher, and the M & F Intimacy Survivors.
    • Between work, cold weather, and a lingering case of not-quite-sick, not-quite-well, my progress has been slow.  But I'm perhaps a few days away from calling it a wrap.
    • We've played KDM a bit, but need to get more KDM play sessions under my belt as a solo-play so I can manage the rules a little better.  Maybe this week.
  • Next weekend might be the long-awaited day where I crack the DropFleet box.  We'll see. :)

2. Gaining Momentum:
  • KDM Wave 2 is loosely slated for late February, but even if it starts on time, it took me almost a month to get my Core Box and I expect similar or worse this time.
  • Rail Raiders: Infinite.  A fun little game that sits squarely on the border between "party game" and dungeon crawler.  We've played a bit, and with some house rules it feels more like a crawler.
  • PC Game:  Guild Wars 2.  I rolled a new Engineer last weekend.  A Char.  I have plenty of ways to boost her up, but just want to level her naturally and learn this class/profession a little better.

3. Losing Traction:
  • Shadows of Brimstone.  I really need to get the entirety of my collection out and get it organized, and perhaps even start a new set of characters through a campaign.
  • Gloomhaven.  I did the Broken Token organizer and wish I had more time and space to setup and play a campaign.  But if I'm going to sit down at the table, right now that means Kingdom Death.
4. Going, going, gone.
  • Nothing new to report.

ZPS - December 2017

2017: The Year of the Monster

Another month, and another year is at an end.  Welcome to the period that I call the Holidaze.  I'll add a bonus section up front for the year-end review.

0. 2017
  • Some years are better than others.  This was a year of changes, but a good year overall.
  • A year ago at this time, the KDM campaign still had several days to go.  I went a little crazy, but being involved in that campaign has been a bright spot in my hobby career.  I still go back and reread the KS updates and watch the videos.
  • Meeting Poots and a gaggle of other game designers at GenCon (part II, part III, part IV, and part V) this year really changed the complexion of that event for me.  Next year's GenCon has some high expectations to live up to.
  • PAX Unplugged served as a bonus event, allowed us to get to know the folks at Dog Might Games in a quieter (compared to GenCon) setting, and the time we spent raiding the Reaper booth for paints has paid off in my KDM work.
  • Understanding.  If I could summarize my 2017 in terms of hobby know-how, it would be the "year of skills."  I've been painting minis off and on for about 2 1/2 years, but 2017 was the year that things clicked.
    • Learning to airbrush has actually made me understand lighting a lot better
    • We've leaned heavily on ArmyPainter products, with only a few pots of Citadel and P3 on the shelf, but in late 2017 we added Reaper, Vallejo, and some higher end brushes into our kit, which as led to a better understanding of how the paints behave and interact.
    • Miniature Monthly has been a great investment for basic skills - especially model prep and filling.
  • I have very few predictions for 2018, and I don't believe in new years' resolutions.  But I'll say this:  I need to lose some weight and do more outside.  I need to get KDM, Brimstone, and DropFleet done or I'll drown in boxes of sprues.  I'd like to actually play more tabletop.  Work is not going to slow down.  Family will continue to demand attention.  All of those vectors will continue to pull me away from my own center.  In the end, it's all going to be fine, but before this time next year I'll need to remind myself of that.

1. On the Table:
  • Kingdom Death: Monster.  This is mostly a repeat of the November post in terms of projects, because Monster lived up to its name and swamped everything else.  Although I paint more slowly than many people, I'm happy with where I'm at.
  • I'm in a good position to wrap up the parts of KDM that I intend to assemble now before the Wave 2 fulfillment (legacy expansions) hits in Feb/Mar.
  • I added a summary page for the KDM Builds up at the top. *points*
  • At the time I'm writing this, the demon chicken (Phoenix) is assembled, filled, and ready for priming (probably tomorrow) and as soon as I post this I'm going to go find the Watcher sprues and grab the clippers.

2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Arcadia Quest.  Santa brought Mrs. Zoxe a copy of the core game and AQ: Pets.  Impressed so far, but will play better with a group of 4.  Pevil, if you're reading this - this is as close to how I pictured CLEGO as I've found so far.
  • Taking decent cell phone pictures.  I'm no expert, but I'm learning.  Mrs. Zoxe got me the light box that you see in use in the latest round of pictures, including the one at the top.

3. Losing Traction:
  • Gloomhaven and DropFleet Commander.  Sigh.  I always say I'm "almost ready" to crack the seal on the DFC box, gotta call this one like it is.

4. Going, going, gone.
  • Downgrading the main 2 PC games this month; I've been far less active than is typical.
    • PC Game: Guild Wars 2
    • PC Game: Heroes of the Storm

ZPS - November

Another month, another Project Status Update.  This has been the month of Kingdom Death.  My core box 1.5 and the upgrade pack arrived.  The backer kit is opened again, and Poots announced the updated Wave 2 Ship Date (which I will admit is exciting but also scares the crap out of me due to the even huger volume of models this represents).  My Halloween KD webstore box arrived and I spent more money on Black Friday on KDM goods.

I did want to comment that it's been a year since I backed Kingdom Death's Kickstarter.  In some ways it feels a lot longer than that, but in others it feels like the campaign ended yesterday.  Having the core box arrive was very surreal for me; after months of staring at the models online I was suddenly staring at my own set - mixed with some disbelief that the reprint actually happened in 2017 (despite the delays, I expected the whole schedule to be pushed even further).

Anyway, let's get on with it!

1. On the Table:
  • Kingdom Death, Kingdom Death, Kingdom Death.  As predicted, the core box arrival swept everything else to the side while I dug into the mountain of sprues that constitutes a 1.5 build.
    • Prologue Survivors - Done
    • White Lion - Done
    • Screaming Antelope - Done
    • Old and Young Survivors - In Primer and Filled
    • Butcher - In Primer and Filled
    • Remainder still on the sprue.
    • Note:  Learning to airbrush on the fantastic KDM models (which are FAR superior to even the best SoB minis) has been one of the biggest joys of my hobby career.
    • Oh, and we played some KDM too.
  • Shadows of Brimstone: Derelict Ship - I actually 'finished' the Necronauts, but I'm not happy with them and will rework when I want a break from KDM.
  • Other SoB minis mentioned last month are still in queue.

2. Gaining Momentum:
  • Gloomhaven.  My copy arrived a few days before PAX Unplugged. I've done a quick inventory but not played yet.  It's been completely overshadowed by holiday travels, PAX travels, and all things KDM.  I currently don't plan to paint the minis and just enjoy this as a "board game."  Crazy, I know.
  • Dropfleet Commander. I'll put this here even though the shrink wrap is still on the box.  I've been playing with the airbrush so much for KDM that I've been musing about how to paint up my UCM fleet.  I need to run some test colors if I get a chance, but the ideas are flowing.
  • This blog.  Spending the extra time to document my KDM builds will pay off down the road (I hope), if for nothing else than my own nostalgia.  But fighting blogger to build the posts, transfer images, and compose reasonable shots does take some extra time.
3. Losing Traction:
  • PC Game: Guild Wars 2.  After the Halloween Event, I kind of went on hiatus.  KDM is consuming all my spare brain cells.
  • PC Game:  Heroes of the Storm.  I'll put this in category 3 even though I'm actually playing a bit more this month than in October.  A single match against AI is about enough time for my Tamiya cement to cure while doing KDM assembly.  :)
4. Going, going, gone.
  • Nothing new for this category.

ZPS - October

The monthly update of all the things going on around here.  Happy Halloweenie!

The status changes compared to last month is really minimal.  We were out of pocket for a long-awaited vacation with friends, which had us in other states - and other countries - across an 11 day trek.  Tack on the prep time ahead, recovery after, and the glut of office hoopla and yard chores awaiting our return, I feel like I lost 3 of the past 4 weeks. I'll try harder in November to make progress on nerd things.

But it's the end of the month, so let's do this!  With bullet points.  Bullet points are cool.

1. On the Table:
  • Shadows of Brimstone: Derelict Ship - Necronauts (Zombie Astronauts) - Partially based
  • Shadows of Brimstone: Derelict Ship - Beacon Drones - Primed
    • I really should knock out the Beacons. The paint scheme I have in mind for them won't be hard; I put them behind the Necronauts because I wanted to paint something other than silver and black.
    • (Shadows of Brimstone: Derelict Ship - Remainder complete)
  • Shadows of Brimstone: Trederra (Trederra Mutants in primer, Legionnaires now mostly based)
    • This is less progress than I wanted, but more than it really sounds like.
    • (Remainder of Trederra is complete)
  • Ninja Division / Kingdom Death Twilight Knight chibi crossover in primer

2.  Gaining Momentum:
  • Kingdom Death: Monster - Part of my reluctance to dig into other parts of my backlog is that "any day now" I should see a KDM shipping notice.  And I will do a happydance.
  • PC Game: Guild Wars 2 - The new Path of Fire expac, plus the Halloween event, consumed more hours than I expected.  I'm working through things slowly compared to most avid gamers, but am almost done with the new story arc.

3. Losing Traction:
  • Dropfleet Commander - Two player starter pack.  This is the biggest disappointment on the list. I intended to devote a full weekend to assembly and paint, but still haven't cracked the shrink wrap.  I'm using the header image above to punish myself.
  • PC Game:  Heroes of the Storm - No specific complaint, just lack of time.  Only the Halloween event kept this from being in the next category.

4. Going, going, gone:
  • Basically, all other PC games.  WoW, EVE, Diablo3, Hearthstone, and a few others that I'm forgetting.
  • Warmachine.  As mentioned last month, I considered picking this up to play at the FLGS.  This month that's even further from being a reality.

ZPS - September

UCM Navy: Coming Soon

Laying the groundwork for future (somewhat) regular updates, I'll break this into four categories and give it an official-sounding name: Zoxe Project Status (ZPS).

With bullet points.  Bullet points are cool.

1. On the Table:

  • Shadows of Brimstone: Derelict Ship (Autoturrets basecoated, remaining primed)
  • Shadows of Brimstone: Trederra (Trederra Mutants and Legionnaires, remaining complete)
  • Ninja Division / Kingdom Death Twilight Knight chibi crossover

2. Gaining Momentum:

  • Dropfleet Commander - Two player starter pack.  Bought this at GenCon, along with a LOT of other DFC content.  Need to get the 2-player pack out and assembled so we can PLAY.
  • Kingdom Death: Monster.  No shipping notice of course, but am mentally preparing for receipt and assembly of the core box.
  • PC Game: Heroes of the Storm.  I'm not much of a MOBA player, but have been enjoying HotS for casual play vs. AI.

3. Losing Traction:

  • Brimstone backlog.  I have so much Brimstone on the shelf; despite some healthy throughput this summer I'm probably losing ground thanks to GenCon acquisitions.  Dropfleet and the pending shipment of Kingdom Death: Monster will cause these boxes to continue to gather dust.
  • Warmachine.  I flirted with buying a 2-player box to get into this title at the FLGS, but alas I just don't have the bandwidth.
  • PC Game:  Guild Wars 2.  This is a great game with some pretty amazing longevity for a 2012 title.  I dusted off my account this summer and found that I really re-enjoyed this game, found a great guild, and finally finished the personal storyline.  But I don't have the ability to really get into longer sessions, and it's a struggle to digest the game in 20-40 minute increments.

4. Going, going, gone....

  • PC Game:  World of Warcraft.  I came back for Legion, and was initially enthused about it after catching the last 6-9 months of Warlords of Draenor.  But alas, the Class Halls, and the relatively small questing map meant that my alt army sat stagnant.
  • PC Game: Overwatch. I really want to like this game, but the headaches this game gives me says my body disagrees.
  • PC Game:  EVE Online.  EVE and I have diverged in interests, resulting in this very blog.
