How to Reapercon

Hello once again,

After a ~10 month absence, it's time to write again. First up, How to Reapercon.

This is written for folks that are perhaps new to Reapercon or new to Conventioning in general.

This is a very tailored list. Reapercon is a very special event. It's small, cozy, and welcoming.  It is perhaps scaled like a large-ish local 'con, but draws people from all over (we drive 14-16h to be there), so things I'm going to suggest here don't necessarily apply elsewhere.  YMMV.

Merry Christmas (2020)

Greetings from the interwebs.  I won't get into the whole "2020" meme thing, but agree it's been "a year."

I am still here.  I don't write/update as often as I'd like but will at least wish everyone at Merry Christmas.  Be excellent to other.

Shadows of Brimstone - The Ancient One

This guy had been on my desk for the better part of a year.  I decided sometime in early 2020 that he would be my goal for Miniature Monthly Masters.  A single - large, but single - figure for the entry.

As Covid got underway, I really lost my painting mojo, and he was backburnered in favor of other projects with more instant gratification.

Meanwhile the Ancient One continued to linger on my desk.  I tried a few things, wasn't happy.  Kept trying.  It got better.

The result was super-fast and involved a lot of airbrush blending and several sessions over the course of a weekend to apply highlights to all his wrinkley bits.

These pictures came out a little washed out and a little dark, but they are what they are.

He took 2nd in the Flying Frogs' Manufacturer's award.  I put him in not expecting to place (at all; when I submitted the Mfr's Award for Frogs didn't exist yet) but am happy that he was enjoyed.

DGS Games Fist of Vidunar

I love the Freeblades models.  They're metal minis, with some classic lines/sculpts that reminds me of several different fantasy series at once. And in a good way.

I've been working this Haradelan Fist of Vidunar off and on for several weeks (*cough*months*cough*), and currently have him at 95% or better.  Good enough to take pictures, at least.  Will go back for some editing after I've not stared at him so much.

The base is from Scibor.  He's intended for display, not play (I have another of him for the table).

Paints were a mix of Reaper, Monument, Liquitex (inks), Secret Weapon (weathering) and a smattering of Army Painter (washes, Matt Black).

The Armor is True Metallic, and was an iterative process that started with dry brushing and then highlights applied by hand.

First real attempt at freehand via the stripe on the tunic and cape.

Most basecoats were put down with the Patriot 105, the Sotar came out for close in work and final touches (like the dirt on the tunic and cape).  The bulk of the weathering/blends are 2-brush blending with semi-transparent paints and washes.

A few more pictures after the break.

Update

TLDR:  We're fine.  I thought about how to start the post, but that's perhaps the best summary.  All things considered, and given the struggles and pain and loss that others are going through, we're fine.

Real Life:
I'd been watching the global situation evolve since before the holidays.  I am not a first responder, but to coin a phrase, I'm sort of a secondary responder.  In our office, there are a handful of processes that I'm responsible for that must continue as unhampered as possible.

Back in January, "This sounds bad," were words I'd shared with family.  I'm not a doomsdayer or a pessimist, and (at least I think) err on the side of practicality.  In late February, we went to the store and stocked up.  No, we weren't part of the TP brigade, but we did fill the pantry with staples.  If things got REALLY bad, we'd not starve.

We were supposed to be on a cruise ship back in Mid March.  Worked kicked into overdrive in the weeks before (unrelated to the pandemic) - I was asked to assist with a high visibility special project consulting for another area. Sitting here typing about it in May, it feels very far away - like it happened to someone else - but those first two weeks of March were some of the busiest and stressful that I'd had in a long while.

We waived off the cruise just days before the major lines announced that they'd pause operations.  Instead, we made some quick reservations and drove to a quiet beach in North Carolina.  No airports, no crowds, and very much their off season.  Just large expanses of empty beach, and some fresh seafood.

It was the break we needed, but while there "shit got real" as they say.  During the drive out that things started getting surreal with friends posting on FB that the store shelves were empty back home while news headlines started looking bleak.  While there, the shutdown started.  I felt like I had to keep 1 foot grounded in reality and keep a bag packed in case interstate travel started being curtailed.  It was a fog that loomed over the entire trip.

The week passed and we drove home.  The interstates weren't entirely empty, but we drove past town after town with malls shut down, hotels empty, and restaurants closed.  Areas that I expected to be congested with traffic simply weren't.  It wasn't a full-stop, but the volume knob had been turned from 11 down to about a 3 1/2.  Just friggin' weird.

Home Life:
Getting home and checking in with work, we started our remote telework routine and have been working from home since.  The last day I was physically in the office was March 12th, over 2 months ago, the day before we left for NC.

If nothing else, this experience has made me appreciate the 10 acres that we own.  The past few years, I've resented (strong word, I'll use it) the time investment that this property requires.  The chores are nonstop, and to be honest -- over the past few years I've only tread water.  But without the commute, and a burning need to get out of the house, we've had freedom and open spaces that many others don't.

One of the first surprise projects was that we cut a trail through the 3 acres behind the house.  This has given us someplace to walk at lunch.  While not "state park" level of manicure, it's shaping up nicely.  Later, we reopened another trail in the front 7 acres, giving us a 1/2 mile loop to walk.

The Hobby:
My desire to 'hobby' has just died.  Totally.  I normally do a lot of my hobby time after we get home but before dinner, and with working from home that's exactly the window in which I MUST MUST MUST GET OUTSIDE.

While work has been better lately, the stress of the crazy situation has led me to hide in WoW Classic after dinner instead of attempting to paint.

I'm still doing monthly lessons with Aaron Lovejoy at Miniature Monthly.  Each month I've scrambled to paint SOMETHING to go over with him.  Oddly, I've gotten more out of our lessons lately, even though I'm not applying the knowledge via bench time.  Something 'clicked' in how he's teaching and how I'm receiving. Pretty cool.

We miss our "convention friends."  Over the past couple of years, we've met some fun people in the gaming/painting world that we see several times a year through the convention circuit.  Adepticon, Gencon, and Reapercon are all canceled.  We'll keep up to date via Discord as best we can, but in person shenanigans are better.

I'm not complaining. I think it was the right choice for the conventions to chill out for a bit.  But it does change the landscape of our year quite a bit.

Merry Christmas! (2019)

Merry Christmas everyone.  And Goodbye 2019, it feels like we hardly knew you.

I've generally stayed away from rambles and personal stuff over the past year; instead this has become a sporadic dumping ground for whatever projects I was wrapping up that were worthy of sharing.  But let's wrap up the year with a retrospective.

Hot of the Desk: Kingdom Death Gigalion

Harsh Kitty. Mean kitty. Little ball of teeth. Angry kitty. Hungry kitty. Kill. Kill. Kill.

I'm following a set of self-imposed color rules for my KDM set. If this is your first post in the series (see summary page), here's the part that I copy/paste:

-----
Color Choices:  For my KDM set, I'm using an airbrush to provide shadows in a pseudo-statue, almost monochrome paint scheme.  I want a lot of high contrast from light to dark, with near-black in the shadows and near-whites in the light.  I'm using warm colors (creamy grays, buttery whites, and a bright mustard yellow) for the SURVIVORS and cool colors (blue-grays and a neon blue) for the MONSTERS.
-----

I actually bought 2 of these kits at Gencon - one to assemble FAST and get on the table, and a second for a future competition piece.  This is the FAST version; as such I decided to use my old Kingdom Death recipes for colors and application.

It's pretty interesting to go back and try to replicate an old paint scheme.  It's been quite awhile since I'd painted this scheme, and I was teaching myself to airbrush when I set out with the 1.5 Core Box.  Since then, I've done dozens of other pieces and this fairly simple theme was kind of refreshing.

KDM Thanksgiving Showdown

Quick post, on the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

This year, instead of family traditions, we accepted an invitation to go hang out with friends.  This is a group from across the country that manages to assemble a few times a year for shenanigans.

This invitation involved a several state road trip, so we set out mid-morning on Wednesday and arrived Wednesday night.  Since we rarely take ANY additional vacation at Thanksgiving (and normally work Black Friday) we were off our usual routine straight out of the gate.  (I could post separately on the evolution and end of family traditions, but won't right now).

Hot off the Desk: Miniature Monthly Masters 2019

Yes, I'm still here.

No, the blog's not dead.  The blog doesn't want to go in the cart.  It's feeling much better.  It feels happy, It feels happy.

Here's a quick post with my entry for the Miniature Monthly 2019 Masters.  I really hadn't planned on entering anything - before a few days ago I hadn't lifted a detail brush since Reapercon.  But then I found this Reaper Winged Cat in our Reapercon Loot bag and decided to play more with the GS World Color Shift Paints (Darth Blue).

Results are "okay."  Good enough that I entered it - just to enter something (someone has to round out the field!).  Total time investment was maybe 3 hours, including prep and priming.  Actual painting was 2 session, maybe an hour each.  I was going for a high contrast, sketch style and wanted to practice texture.  He's a very small mini to really paint "fur" on but I tried anyway.

I'm happy with the result for what it is, even if it's nearly impossible to take decent pictures of the color shift paint!

Reapercon 2019

It's been almost 3 weeks, I guess I should post a ReaperCon Report!

First, let's rewind the clock even more.

Hot off the Desk: DGS Games Kuzaarik Stoneclaw Savage

Dwarven calvary! Rawr!

You've already seen the finished product in the prior post.  We're headed to Reapercon this weekend so I'll set this to robo-post while I'm away.

Display Bases 101

Ready for Reapercon. Kuzaarik Stoneclaw Savage.

One of the best things about this hobby is that it can bleed over into other parts of your hobby/interests. Whether I'm stealing techniques from my Radio Control Car and Boat past, or I'm using household materials to get something to work, it's fun for me to step outside of the accepted norms of the Miniature / Boardgame / Wargame world and bring something else to the table.

I was fortunate to have a father that was trained in carpentry.  He's had a woodshop since the early 70s, and as a kid growing up without the internet, the shop was a place to play and doodle and build things.  I don't maintain all of my father's skills, but just a little bit of it was passed on, and today I have a small glimmer of his woodshop here in my garage.  And that lets me do some fun things.

The task this weekend was to make a display base for my Reapercon entry - the Freeblades Kuzaarik Stoneclaw Savage from DGS Games..

Hot off the Desk: Shadows of Brimstone Darkstone Scorpions

Angry scorpions!

In my first post-GenCon update, I think I'll do a picture dump of my Dark Stone Scorpions for Shadows of Brimstone.

This project started as a quick and dirty test of Greenstuff World's Color Shift Paint.  I originally intended just to hit the models with a basecoat, maybe highlight the eyes, and get them on the table quickly.
